Suffer the Little Children (Donna Leon)
A reluctant witness recounting apparently strange goings on in the apartment opposite her home to the police. You just have to read on to find out what it's all about. A really good way to start a book and hook your reader. I will have to make a note to use this technique in my own writing.

The Three Evangelists (Fred Vargas)
Translated from French by Sian Reynolds, this winner of the Duncan Lawrie International Dagger is an unusual whodunnit. The three evangelists of the title, Mathias, Marc and Lucien (given the nick name in reference to their biblical namesakes, Matthew, Mark and Luke), with the help of an ex-cop, investigate strange happenings in their neighbour Sophia's garden. Sophia then promptly disappears.
Small Island (Andrea Levy)
Having thoroughly enjoyed this book, I was very glad to find out that it is being adapted for television. Let's hope it doesn't disappoint as adaptations sometimes do.
